Find out if your local exchange currently offers ADSL

To date just over 2000 telephone exchanges have been upgraded for Broadband based on ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology. This is a technology that works over a normal phone line, turning it into a Broadband line capable of receiving data up to 40 times faster than with a normal dial up modem.

This coverage means that aproximately 70% of homes and 68% businesses are now connected to a Broadband ADSL exchange; if your exchange is not yet enabled by pre-registering your interest in ADSL will help to bring ADSL to your area. Almost every exchange in the UK has a "trigger level" set which is the number of pre-orders required for BT to upgrade the exchange to support ADSL broadband.

The only other restriction is that the line between you and the exchange must be below 6km in length - as the ADSL signal degrades over distance.
